Rabbis

As in many other small towns the Rabbi performed multiple functions. Besides from being Rabbi, most of the time he was precentor, teacher and sjochet. We are badly informed about their competencies, but it would be good not to take our imagination too far.

The first specifically named Rabbi was Abraham van der Munten in 1740. Considering his name he originated from Termunten or maybe Muntendam. Gossel Salomon van Brakel was working as Rabbi probably since 1745, and definitely from 1749 to 1757. In 1756 Hartog Mozes requests permission to settle in Appingedam as Rabbi, but the authorities denied his request. Still Hartog Jacobs replaced Brakel in 1757, because Brakel had become too old in the opinion of the Jewish Congregation.

He hasn't served very long, because in October 1758 there is mention of Rabbi Jacob Salomons or Samuels, who filled the post of Rabbi until approximately 1768. From 1759 to approximately 1782 we encounter Israël Davids as Rabbi, religious teacher and sjochet. His successor was Hartog Mayer, who worked for a salary of 50 Guilders a year until 1796.

Although the latter still called himself Rabbi, the Jewish Congregation of Appingedam had placed themselves under the authority of the Rabbi of the City of Groningen, and that wouldn't change anymore.
