Synagogues

The first synagogue was probably no more than a room in the home of one of the members of the Jewish Congregation. The most likely place would be Joseph Meyer's home at the northern side of the Solwerdestraat. In 1669 the authorities ordered this synagogue to be closed.

In 1698 Izak Hessels bought a house at the Gouden Pand. In this house he furnished a synagogue, where probably sermons were held until 1728. After Izak Hessels death in 1728 the synagogue sermons were held in another building, until in 1752 the East Frisian Calmer Arents bought a house at the northern side of the Dijkstraat, and lent this to the Jewish Congregation as synagogue and bathhouse.
This house, that passed into the hands of the Jewish Congregation in 1795, would serve as synagogue for almost half a century.

In 1800 the Jewish Congregation bought property at the Broerstraat and had a synagogue built. It was festively consecrated on July 24, 1801, and sermons were held here until 1942.
