In the second half of the 18th century the first Jewish people settled in Bellingwolde. They were predominantly merchants and butchers. Oudeschans and Bellingwolde together formed a Jewish Congregation.
Bellingwolde ran 20 souls in 1813, and in Oudeschans lived only 5 Jewish people. Notwithstanding the small number of Jewish people there was a religious teacher and a precentor. As of 1821 they were part of the Jewish Congregation Nieuweschans.
In 1887 they tried to obtain the status of Jewish Congregation. This failed.
