Notwithstanding the small number of Jewish people in the village during the 18th century there are indications that they had a home synagogue. At least, that is what we can conclude from a tax collector letter from 1780.
In 1813 a home synagogue is mentioned as well. It is unknown in whose house the synagogue was. There was talk of a small synagogue in the Batterijstraat in 1835. This place was probably rented, because in 1837 the minister gave the Jewish Congregation permission to buy the 'state-owned house', and to designate it as synagogue. It really must have been a ruinous building. For, in 1838 and following years the Parnassim (administrators) of the congregation requested multiple times permission to raise funds in the province to restore the building.
Then a new synagogue was built in 1842, and on May 21st that year it was consecrated. At present the synagogue, and the teacher's home behind it, are restored. They serve as museum.
