Synagogues

In the beginning of the 19th century the synagogue sermons were held in a rented house. In 1816 a number of members of the Jewish Congregation buy a house at the Landstraat.

This house served as synagogue until 1842. It was considerably rebuild, and an school building was added on. During the restoration work the so-called hospital room served as synagogue.

In 1842 King William II donated the former hussar stable, located at the corner of the Kerkstraat and Oude Schans, to the Jewish Congregation. The building was rebuild and furnished as synagogue with adjoining teacher's house. Behind the building a separate school was built.

In 1887 this building was sold as well. Then a new synagogue was built at the Singel, which was put into use in 1888.

After the war this building was rebuilt into a bathhouse, and later the Salvation Army was established in it.
