Synagogues

During most of the 19th century a synagogue did not exist in Grijpskerk and surroundings. Definitely in 1851, but probably earlier as well, sermons were held in a room in Niezijl. In this village it was attempted to build a synagogue. But this intention was defeated by unwillingness of the regional administration.

Probably as of 1879 there was a synagogue in Grijpskerk. It was located in part of a home at the former Kreupelstraat, nowadays Molenstraat, and it was rented from the inhabitants who lived there at that time.
