Until 1747 the Groninger Jews buried their deceased in Appingedam, Oude Pekela or Leeuwarden. In that same year the Jewish congregation obtained a piece of property at one of the fortifications of the city. It was here that a cemetery was created. In 1782 it was expanded.
Nowadays this area is commonly known as the Jodenkampje. This cemetery would be used until 1838. There were about 54 tomb-stones, the oldest dating from 1747. In the years 1952/1953 the cemetery was cleared and remains and tomb-stones have been brought to the Moesstraat.
As of 1828 the Jewish Congregation had a new cemetery to it's disposal outside the city at the Moesstraat. End 19th century part of the General Cemetery in Selwerd was developed as Jewish cemetery.
