The first Rabbi of the Jewish Congregation Groningen was Izaak Jozef Cohen. Born about 1702 in Hamburg, and passed away on December 13, 1788 in Groningen. As of about 1735 until his death in 1788 he occupied the position of Rabbi.
Levie Hartog Geloga (Arje Leib ben Zwi Hirsch Jafe) was, as indicated by his name, originally originating from the present Polish Glogau. Before his appointment on July 18, 1790 in Groningen he was Rabbi in Amsterdam. He passed away in 1798 in Groningen. Geloga was the first Rabbi who graced himself with the title Upper Rabbi.
According to some sources Geloga's successor was Isaak Lemming. He would have been Rabbi in the years 1800 and 1801. But contemporary proof for this is lacking.
On July 4, 1802 Samual Berenstein from Hannover became Rabbi. He filled the position until December 5, 1808. He then left for Leeuwarden
His successor was Abraham Izaks Deen or Tiktin, who was born in Copenhagen in about 1760 and was elected Rabbi in 1811. After the big fire had hit Copenhagen he moved to Steinfurt. In this city he must have gained the competencies to become Rabbi. He filled this position until his death in 1821.
Salomo Jozef Rosenbach, who had been Dajan (Assistant Rabbi) from 1821 to 1823, was the next Rabbi from 1824 to 1848. Between 1848 and 1851 Baruch Bendit, Rabbi in Leeuwarden, was acting Rabbi of Groningen as well.
Jakob Rosenberg, former Rabbi of Fulda, was elected as his successor on September 7, 1852. The board (Parnassim) of the Jewish Congregation fired him end 1860, and he remained Rabbi until December 1861. Rabbi Jirmejahu Hillesum of Meppel attended the Rabbinate as of 1862.
It was not until May 2nd, 1888 that Groningen elected their own Rabbi being Rabbi Abraham van Loen. He remained Rabbi until November 1903. He then left for The Hague. His successor Eliëzer Hamburg was inaugurated on May 24, 1905. He passed away on April 3, 1918. As of June 1st, 1919 he was succeeded by Abraham Asscher, who was Rabbi until his death on May 10, 1926. Bernard Davids was inaugurated on September 18, 1927 and occupied the position of Rabbi from that date.
Davids was inaugurated as Upper rabbi in Rotterdam on December 2, 1929. He was succeeded by Simon Dasberg, who was inaugurated on March 20, 1932, and he has been Rabbi of the Jewish Congregation into the years of war. Aäron Prins started working as Rabbi on May 20, 1949. He has been doing so until 1952. After this time the Jewish Congregation Groningen would not have a Rabbi anymore.
