Synagogues

The oldest mention of a synagogue dates from 1691. In that year the local Authorities of Groningen learned that the local Jewish people held sermons without having permission.

Without a doubt that was in a home synagogue, probably in a room at the house of Levie Jozefs, originating from Appingedam. In 1731 Mozes Goldsmid leased the pawnshop. It was established in a big building at the Poelestraat, there where the present Concert building is established. One of the rooms was furnished as a synagogue.

In 1754 the lease contract ended, and the Jewish Congregation had to look for another space. Groningen Folkingestraat Ets Haim building For the time being a rental at the Steenstraat had to do. But still in that same year a few houses at the corner of the Folkingestraat and the Nieuwstad were bought.

These were demolished and on this property arose a new synagogue. August 20th, 1756 this building was festively consecrated. This building essentially served as synagogue until the beginning of the 20th century. The building had become so ruinous in the mean time that demolition was opted. On the spot of the old building a new synagogue arose. The consecration took place on March 23rd, 1906. The building was sold in 1952 and its use as dry-cleaner started. With the instance of Groninger population the building was restored in the seventieth of the 19th century and was reconsecrated on November 29, 1981. Up to now a part of the building serves as synagogue.

May 1812 there is talk of a second synagogue (neighborhood x no. 34), that predominantly served aliens and the poor. The building was also home to precentor Hartog Arons.

Mid 19th century part of the Groninger Jews seceded from the Jewish Congregation and founded a new Jewish Congregation named Terschuath Jisraël (Salvation of Israël). They took at the Zuiderdiep the synagogue into use on June 3rd, 1856.

This building was demolished in 1933.
Further, the Jewish Congregation had a so-called youth and day synagogue to its disposal at the Folkingedwarsstraat. It was consecrated on March 31, 1940. The Jewish Congregation held its sermons in this synagogue after the sale of the bigger synagogue in 1952.
