Cemetery
At first the Jewish people from Hoogezand and surroundings buried their deceased at Veendam. That was a relatively large distance, and multiple attempts were made to found a cemetery of their own. In 1818 a request is denied to be allowed to develop a cemetery behind the synagogue.
In 1837 one does get permission to develop a cemetery at Kalkwijk. In the meantime this place had probably become to distant. Eventually a cemetery was developed at Kolham.
