Rabbi

The first person of whom we know with some certainty that he served as a Rabbi for the Jewish people of Oude Pekela was Miggiel Abrahams born about 1720. His name is mentioned for the first time in 1758 and for the last time in 1759.

The second person referred to as Rabbi is Beer Juda Levi, who was born in the Polish town Nijstadt. He had moved from Lissau to settle in the Pekelas, where he passed away in 1772. The Jewish Congregation Pekela placed themsleves under the authority of the Groninger Rabbi Levie Hartog Geloga in 1792. After Geloga's death in 1798 Baruch the Beer (1756-1810) from Breit (probably Markbreit in Bayern) is appointed. He was precentor, religious teacher and sjochet as well.

He called himself 'Rabbi of the Pekela and Westerwoldingerland'. As of the reoganization of the Dutch Jewish people in a National Communion the Pekela Jews were placed under the authority of the Upper Rabbi in Groningen.
