About 1700 already eight families lived in the Pekelas. One of those families was Daniel Jacobs', he bought at the north side of the Benedenste Verlaat a house. This house is portrayed on a contemporary card. If the Jewish people of Pekela would have had a synagogue, which is not certain, it must have been in this house.
In 1737 a synagogue was built in the village behind the house of Hendel Hindriks widow of Hendel Heimans. The Pekelas had the very first purposely built synagogue of the Province of Groningen. In 1791 the building, in the meantime ruinous, passed into the hands of the Jewish Congregation. They had it broken down and build a new synagogue on that same spot.
The House of God was consecrated on August 3, 1792 with a speech of the Groninger Rabbi Levie Hartog Clogau. Thanks to several repairs sermons could be held here for almost a century. But in 1882 it had become that ruinous that part of the roof collapsed.
In 1884 a contract for building a new synagogue was placed, and September 5th, 1882 the building was taken into use. It was located at the other side of the Pekelder Hoofddiep, close to the outfall of the Compagnievaart. in 1950 the building was sold and demolished in 1979.
