The first mention of a local synagogue dates from 1845. It was located in a rented house 'East of the canal' on the spot where later the synagogue was built. As of 1850 the Stadskanaler Jews attempted multiple times to build a synagogue. Because of mutual disputes and mismanagement they did not succeed.
Not until 1860 they were able to contract the building out. On September 7, 1860 the building was consecrated by a speech of the Veendammer religious teacher Jonas Levie Voorzanger. After the war the building was in such a bad state, that the only thing left to do was break it down. That was done in 1958.
Where once the synagogue was is now a shopping mall. Up to 1964 synagogue sermons were yet held at the former teacher's home in front of the synagogue.
