History

The Jewish Congregation Stedum was formed by the Jewish people from the villages Stedum, Loppersum, Middelstum, and Ten Boer. The oldest mention of Jewish inhabitants in this area dates from 1620. During the 17th and 18th century fore-mentioned villages counted only a few Jewish families. Predominantly they traded cattle, meat and traveled as pedlar.

Only 28 Jewish people lived in the fore-mentioned villages combined in 1813, in 1889 the Jewish Congregation counted 83 Jewish people. After that year their number decreased. In 1930 the four villages only counted 29 Jewish inhabitants.
Up to 1821 Stedum was an independent Jewish Congregation. In fore-mentioned year it was added to Appingedam, and it obtained the status Branch Church.

In 1877 the congregation obtained its independence again under the name Dutch Israelitic Congregation Stedum/Loppersum.
