As in most small villages the Jewish people held their their sermons locally in a private home. Before 1777 Mozes Alexander provided a room in his home in Middelstum for that purpose. The Local Authority learned about it. They then proclaimed that to hold such sermons was prohibited.
In 1813 there is talk of a synagogue in Stedum at the house of Moses Gronsveld available to the Jewish people. This property was located at the west side of the Molenstraat, reckoned from the Molenstraat the third house. Then, we only read about the existence of a synagogue in 1856.
It is unknown if it is referring to the same space as in 1813. In 1896 there is talk of a building serving as synagogue, that had been built between 1888 and 1890.
Even before the Second World War the building didn't serve as synagogue anymore. After the war it has been rebuilt into a garage and was then broken down. The facade stone of the synagogue is since 1998 part of a monument.
