History

The town of Ter Apel is located in the utmost south-east of the Province of Groningen. It was an agricultural orientated village. End 18th century the first Jewish people settled here. The number of Jewish inhabitants would not increase until during the 19th century the peatmoors were brought into cultivation. The village belonged to the civic town Vlagtwedde, and to the church of the Jewish Congregation Pekela.

This changed in 1880 when the Jewish Congregation Terapelerkerk (later renamed into Jewish Congregation Ter Apel) was founded. The Jewish people of the villages Ter Apel, Emmer-Compascuum, Roswinkel and Zandberg belonged to this congregation.
