Ter Apel was far away from towns with a synagogue. For that reason sermons were impossible. Attempts were made to fill this need by renting rooms, and use these as so-called home synagogues.
During part of the 19th century the Jewish Congregation had a home synagogue to their disposal at the Boetseweg in Roswinkel. With the increase of the number of Jewish people in the village itself the home synagogue was moved to the village Ter Apel. In 1880 a piece of property was bought at the Stads-Terapelkanaal. In 1883 building was contracted out and on July 13th of that year the synagogue was consecrated.
In 1949 the building was sold to the town of Vlagtwedde and then broken down.
