History

In 1620 the rumor circulates that Jewish people want to settle in Uithuizen, a village in the north-east of the Province. Like everywhere else the Reformed Church tried to stop that from happening. However it might be, this small village never counted many Jewish people. Not until 1738 there is mention of two Jewish families. They were occupied with the sales of cattle and meat. Neither the number of Jewish people nor the way they made their living changed much during the 19th and 20th century.

The Jewish people in the village were until 1821 part of the Jewish Congregation Stedum. After that year they belonged to the Jewish Congregation Appingedam. In 1880 and 1890 attempts were made to achieve the foundation of a Jewish Congregation. Because of mutual disagreement the attempt didn't succeed.

In 1887 the status 'Branch Church' was obtained, but they remained management wise related to Appingedam.
