Rabbis

The first Rabbi, of whom we know the first name in 1752 is one Abraham. He is probably the father of Hartog Abrahams, who signed deeds as Naftali Hirsch son of our teacher Avraham.

Nathan Godschalk (Gossels) is the second Rabbi of whom we know the name. He has settled in Veendam in 1766, and according to him he was born in 'Lengsveld' (Hessen). He definitely has been Rabbi up to October 1785. In that same year one Rabbi Wolf Isak settled in Veendam. It is questionable if he did work as such. For, on October 5th, 1785 the Jewish Congregation hired Baruch de Beer (1756-1810), originating from Breit as Rabbi, religious teacher, precentor and sjochet.

He occupied this position until he transferred to Pekela in 1798. In the years 1806 and 1807 the former Rabbi of Winschoten, Aron Mozes Frankforter, occupied the position of Rabbi.
