History

Vlagtwedde is an agricultural oriented village in the south-east of the Province of Groningen. The first Jewish families settled here in the first half of the 18th century. Most of the time no more than two Jewish families lived in the village during that century. Their most important means of subsistence was trade of cattle, meat and assorted good and slaughter.

In 1809 the village counted 35 Jewish people and in 1899 140. As of 1821 Vlagtwedde is part of the Jewish Congregation Pekela. After the foundation of the so-called Branch Church Bourtange they were part of that Jewish Congregation. Because bridging the distance to Bourtange took a relatively long time, several attempts were made as of 1866 to become an independent Jewish Congregation.

It succeeded in 1895. Together with the Jewish people from Wedde and Vriescheloo the Jewish Congregation Vlagtwedde was formed. But already in 1921 this independent status ended.
