Synagogues

A home synagogue is mentioned for the first time in 1773. It was probably located at the same house at the Wevershorn, that would be referred to as 'Jewish synagogue' in the tax register two years later in 1775. In 1797 the Jewish Congregation requests permission to raise funds for the construction of a new synagogue.

The reason for this was that notice was given for the rent of the building at the Buitenvenne, that had become ruinous in the meantime. This is how we learned that the Jewish Congregation Winschoten at least had a home synagogue at the Wevershorn and Buitenvenne before the year 1797.

In November 1797 the Jewish Congregation obtains a piece of property at the Langestraat, on which then a synagogue is built with 70 seats. Because of the increase of the Jewish population this building was soon too small.

Therefore a new synagogue was built at the Bosstraat between 1852 and 1854. This building was consecrated in September 1854. After the war the building was sold. Nowadays it serves as a church for the Free Reformed Congregation.
