Synagogues

Like in many small villages a real synagogue did not exist. In 1813 a home synagogue is mentioned. It was probably located in the house of Izaak Markus van Berg in Obergum, who had bought the house in 1774. It is unknown if this is the same home synagogue at the Westerstraat of later references.

December 1878 the construction of a new synagogue in Obergum was contracted out. This House of God at the Schoolstraat 24 was consecrated in 1879. Nowadays this building is commonly known as the N.A. de Vries building. Due to a decrease in members the building was made available for other activities, and it was sold in 1940.
